STRUGGLE MART
This immersive exhibition follows the notion of what it means to be stuck in a period of time within your life where you do not know what your direction is, how you feel about your goals, ideas, sense of self…or even what you want to eat for dinner! She creates a surreal world where all the sounds and visuals contribute to this story of Limbo, though the installation provides a dark comedic humour on the topic, the photographs on the walls and poetry that are written on the supermarket aisle floor that guides you around the exhibition - tell a emotive and profound study of what it means to exist as a human being in a state of ‘Limbo’ - a feeling that can be universally interpreted. Jenna explores the possibility of being trapped in a state of ‘struggle’ ...as if she were stuck in a supermarket, unable to shop for anything other than the un-nutritional meals that contribute to the depletion of productivity.
Collaborators and Contributors
Jenna invited different artists to contribute to this immersive exhibition, either as collaborators or selected works that she felt translated the theme of the project.
Jenna worked with graphic designer, Arildson Vieira, to work on a t-shirt design that would act as ‘supermarket uniform’ (and later be sold as merchandise). The design followed one of the topics under the theme of Limbo, Envy.
Along this same topic, Jenna filmed a costume movement piece by Kira Copeland which Jenna perceived to be a beautiful depiction of what it can feel like when envy takes over the body; how an emotional internal feeling may look like as a surreal physical happening. She paired this film with documentation of another interpretations of everyday states of Limbo.
Selected photography works by Lydia Wilks and a photo series that Jenna photographed for Bali Ambida-Ward were displayed in the exhibition as the pieces articulate the beauty in the alienation of self during of the state of Limbo. It is actually a beautiful period of time of transition and transformation of self that is hard to apprieciate when one is going through it. Jenna also asked musicians Yogicbeats, Negabrandon and Kai Kwasi to curate a soundtrack to the place of STRUGGLE MART.
