You Just Killed A Squirrel

This project was exhibited as a work-in-progress piece in the exhibition Piecemeal curated by Lottie Mac in November 2023.

Jenna exhibited the annotations of the first draft in a first-aid cabinet on the wall. The book was found in a piano stool that audience members were invited to open, take out the headphones, book and affirmation card offering (for them to keep) and sit on the piano stool to experience the piece of work.

This sonic book is a collection of poems, photographs, collages and illustrations between the years of 2020-2022. The abstracted book tells the story of what it feels like to be the fallout of someone else’s actions, reactions and instinctual patterns of behaviour. The journey of losing oneself as a result, to finding joy in the beauty of everyday life again. The sonic component to the book takes the audience on an audio journey as they read and visually process the book. It aims to reflect the themes discussed.

Before the piece of music was made, the book was sent in the post as a draft to 4 friends and they were asked to make annotations on whatever feelings, memories, relatable moments that the images and words brought up for them. As the book aims to be a pocket-sized alternate version of a self-help book for those going through similar situations, the journey that the draft went on became a vital part of the project. One friend sent it to the next, who forwarded it onto the next and so on until it found its way back to Jenna.
